In 2002, Kari Traa had just won an Olympic gold medal in Salt Lake City, cementing her position as a world-class freestyle skier. But she couldn't find world-class sportswear made for women. Sportswear simply wasn't made with the female body in mind, and what was available just didn't fit quite right. It had no sense of creativity or playfulness, and most importantly, it lacked the confidence and freedom Kari could feel when she skied. So what was a woman to do? Kari's response was to take matters into her own hands. Literally.

She started knitting beanies and customizing her own gear, adding color and
uniqueness that matches her personality. The designs quickly became popular with her friends and skiers, so she soon decided to turn the hobby into a business. And so the Kari Traa brand was born.
